In the beginning of May VisionAfrica was lucky enough to travel to Linda Compound in Lusaka, Zambia to visit our friends. Since Feb 2013 VisionAfrica have taken over 750 bras from the UK to a group of pioneering women in this community along with other donations including wool. This group of women are now called Linda Women’s Association. They have used the bras to open their own shop in the community of nearly 30,000 people.
Through selling the bras these women have managed to start new lives for themselves. They have raised enough money to form an organisation, open a bank account and become official. The Linda Women’s Association is an umbrella organisation for 4 women’s groups each with between 15-20 members.
The women make crafts, farm, sell produce and make local medicines and spices for the markets. With the injection of cash provided by selling the bras and wool the women can invest in their money making activities and branch out into new areas. We are proud of these women, their dedication and hard work and will continue to support them in their ambitions to build a better community.
Women are the heart
Women are the heart of the community and with the profits from their business ventures ensure that their children get a good education and their elders are cared for properly. When we support a woman in Linda Compound we support her whole extended family, neighbours and friends. Thank you for making this happen. Thank you for your donations. Keep them coming.
Doreen Musamba is one of the customers of the bra shop in Linda and she said “I bought two Bras for K10. There is another bra shop in Linda but these are far superior to that in quality. We women in Linda want to wear good bras but we find it hard to get them. Instead of getting them from town it is better we can get them from here……we have to pay K6.5 for transport.’
