Young people in Linda have limited options for work and education and in this environment could be susceptible to drugs, drink and criminality. Sport offers them a great opportunity to channel their energies positively and helps them to work together. VisionZambia supports the local Sports Club to develop programmes to harness sports ability and increase life skills.
There are two soccer teams – boys and girls – and both play in a local league with growing success. There is also now a netball team of boys and girls playing tournament netball, in a higher league, which until recently involved most matches being played away. VisionZambia has supported the restoration of the netball pitch which has brought transport costs down and provided a base for the new team. The Linda community supports these teams with over 500 people regularly attending matches so building community cohesion whilst developing the confidence of these young players.
In 2019 VisionZambia funded netballs, footballs, coaching fees, registration fees and support for teams’ transport to away games.
